Extracting with a layer mask in PSE

Extracting with layer masks is quick and easy. and it is non-destructive because there's no erasing on the original photo. you can go back every step if you made a little mistake.
I want to extract this fish and use in a layout. first I use the crop tool(click c)
to crop every part of the photo as close to the object as possible:

Then I use the lasso tool (click l) to draw a loose line around the conture of the fish. it don't has to be very exact, because we remove the edges later:

When you close the lasso line you will see the marching ants which shows the selected area. Now click ctrl +j
and the selected area appears on a new layer, you see that in the layer palette layer 1 :

Now it's time for dragging the object into your layout. the edges are still visible, but this is no problem, the will become invisible in the next steps:

turn your fish(or any other object-)layer into a layermask.Click the little layermask symbol at the bottom of your layerpallette and you will get the white thumbnail of the mask beside the thumbnail of the fish in the layerpalette. when working in the mask modus, forground and backgroundcolor will turn into black and white.

Now zoom into Actual Pixels (100 % view) choose a soft brush (click B) and paint with black carefully along the edges of your object. you see what happens, the will be unvisible. if you make a mistake, switch forground and background color with x and paint with white -the picture appears again. you see what you done in the mask thumbnail in the layerspallette.

go on until the whole object is extracted.

when you are done right click into the thumbnail and choose symplify layer to turn the mask again into a normal layer. voila ----don't forget to add dropshadows to make it look as realistic as possible.

PSE 9 tutorial : creating clipping masks

Scrapteam's cu-product "Messy folded and textured background overlays" was created in PS CS 4 but it can also be used in PSE. Using clipping masks is a quick and easy way to recolor the overlays .

1. Open the overlay:

2. Go to Layer/new fill layer/solid color. you can also create a new layer with a gradient or pattern, since my overlays are already textured, you don't have to do it in this case.

3. In the next window you can pick a color for the fill layer ( or just type in the hex number), klick ok.

4. the whole canvas will be floodfilled with the choosen color. In your layerpallette you can see the new fill layer above the first layer. if you change the blend mode, the overlay will become visible. I took "soft light", but you can try everything from multiply, overlay,... to color. Just find out what looks best.

5. In this step we will create a clipping mask.Press Alt-key (Option in Mac OS) and move the pointer to the border between the two layers in the layers -pallette until it turns into two overlapping circles. click and there you are!

6. last step is right click into the mask layer and choose "merge down" to stick overlay and mask together.

that was easy, wasn't it?
You can also use this technique to clip your own papers to many of scrapteam's tools. Just drag the paper over the shape, mat or border and create a clipping mask.

Photoshop tutorial: Motion Blur

Here I show you how a picture taken at a fun park can be treated with the filter Motion Blur.
this is the original photo:

I think it would look more interesting in black and white. a great way to turn photos into bw is the channel-mixer. you find it under Image/Adjustments:

when the channelmixer pops up you should first check the box "monochromatic", then you can play with the sliders for red, green and blue. At last adjust the slider "Constant" and click ok. In that way you can get much better bw- photos:

Now you should duplicate your layer. go to the layerpallette and rightclick your layer (here: background). you can choose "duplicate layer" from the menu. My new layer is called "background copy".

Be sure that your copy layer is marked blue,we are going to work on it with a filter.Open it with Filter/Blur/Motion blur:

In the following pop up you can adjust how strong the filter effects your layer. for my photo I had also to adjust the angle into the direction of the movement:

If you like the blur click ok. then we have to turn this (background copy) layer into a layermask.At the foot of the layerpallette is a little symbol looking like a little rectangle with a circle inside. clicking this adds a layermask to your layer. you can see the mask as a white rectangle beside of the layer thumbnail.

Now paint with a soft roud brushtip with foregroundcolor black on your photo all the spots you want to be sharp. these are for example the objects nearest to the viewer. with clicking "x" you can switch between painting in black or white: black removes the blur, white restores it.

you can see on the mask's thumbail where I have painted with black to remove the blurriness. Once you are satisfied with the result , merge layers or flatten image. and this is my result:

Making snow snow-white with Photoshop

sometimes on snow-pictures the snow looks more grey than white. With Photoshop you can turn it snow-white again with a few clicks. My photo as shot:

go to Image/Adjustments/Curves or just click Ctrl+M

the following window will pop up

choose the right of the three pipettes and click with it into the brightest spot of white in your photo:

confirm with ok and voila! - the grey snow turns bright and white
